Helmets falling off after getting shot in the head.

I think many of you noticed that getting one shot in the head no matter what helmet you got is normal. Despite the fact helmets are really heavy they dont give you almost any protection against arrows. In my oppinion only those who decided not to take the helmet in favour of speed should be penalized by 1 shot in the head.

I have been thinking what would be the best way how to balance this for a while. Originally I wanted to decrease damage of arrows but its a bad choice because body hits are fairly balanced. Recently I remembered Chivalry had helmets that fell off after getting hit by arrow or throwing weapon. So why not to have this in okam. First hit in the head would stun the knight and he would lose the helmet. Without helmet second hit would be lethal and it doesnt matter if its with arrow or sword.

This will encourage archers to shoot in the legs and body instead of going for easy kills in the head. It will decrease amount of damage build archers/naked archers because even with 15 damage you will be able to 2 shot a guy in the head. With these changes flat bow will be finally a viable option and archers with more armor aswell. Not to mention that with less damage archer sidearm will no longer kill everybody in 2 hits.

I made this suggestion not only to highlight how bad helmets are atm. But also to point out that getting one hit in the head is really frustrating for everybody. I am personally just annoyed but a lot of players especially the new ones are leaving because of that. Perfect example of this are skirmish maps where 40 people manage to leave in matter of 20 minutes just because too many people started to play with the bow. This is actually one of the main reasons why skirmish maps are completely dead right now.

Would be a pretty big feature, so can't say just yet when it can be implemented. Unless helmets simply disappear, would also need work on art and physics engine, but sounds like a really fun thing with helmets dropping off!

Helmets will get a bit of a buff in the next update, since they'll have mail coifs instead of linen coifs, so it might decrease a number of one-hit headshots (melee hits too of course).

Agreed on everything. 1hits shouldn't ever kill you in this game unless you deliberately decide to go without armor/helmet. The game shouldn't turn into a sniper fest.

Also helmets falling on the ground are fun. Always loved that in Chivalry.

i wouldnt like to loose my helmet with the first strike, its to easy to aim for the head with a melee weapon

You will lose the helmet only after arrow hit. Helmets will be the same for the melee attacks.

"Without helmet second hit would be lethal and it doesnt matter if its with arrow or sword."

thought you want that for okam..
hm i usualy survive 1 headshot and die by the second arrow /body or headshot.. so it wouldnt change much, only for low hp builds a buff, and a big archer nerf. its still not that easy to hs, and 2 hs on 1 target is even harder.

Its really easy to headshot people if you spent atleast a few hours playing with bow. Also If somebody shoot you in the head and you survive because of high hp stat. It doesnt really matter if you get hit in the head or body because you will die to 2nd atack anyway. You will always have just a few % hp left after getting headshoted by archer. Btw the quote was without helmet second hit in the head would be lethal so after getting headshoted by an archer. Anyway I doubt you can survive 3 melee headshots atm anyway.

Nice! But perhaps the exemption is that while you have chain or gambeson/fiber based helms that the arrow acts like as it does now. And for heavy crossbows or such lower tier metal ones also share the same fate.

However, how would one of those fully enclosed helms fall off? Also aren't they bound to your head with cloth bindings which commonly strap below your chin (as in open faced ones)? Perhaps they don't, just all the damage is converted to blunt or something..... What you think of this logic Kaktus? Fall off anyway, specific hitboxes where there effective (man that would be irritating as archer...)... then you could make the argument that those flat bow shots doing nothing realistically on a knights full plate + two layers of protection......

Thoughts?

Well straw hats and chainmail will ofcourse work the same way as they did so far. I wouldnt mind if heavy crossbows had an exception because headshoting somebody with cbow is almost impossible to do. Helmets dont necesarilly have to fall off if you want it to be a bit more realistic. Your character might drop the helmet because its broken after the shot. Well I would like if the helmets had the same protection from all the sides. Because you mostly get shot from the front and only potentional weak spots on the closed helmets are the gaps for your eyes and mouth. Also if you had these weak spots archers would 1 shot you most of the time on melee so this feature would not fix much. Not to mention people would have to turn around and do stuff like this just to avoid getting one shoted I am not really fan of this to be honest.

Even with mail coif you will get 1 shoted most of the time and if you survive by some miracle you will have really low hp. Also by adding mail coifs you will disbalance melee headshots. Right now stabs and lower diagonals with right timing deliver basically the same damage as melee headshots about 60% hp. Mail coif will most propably allow you to survive more hits to the head than legs. My point is that helmets definitely need a boost but only against arrows. I am pretty sure that people will be able to survive 3 melee headshots with that while dying to 2 stabs in the legs which is ridiculous. Instead of adding mail coifs you should have made some kind of reduced damage to the helmet by arrows.
